What is the Yates Society?
耶茨协会 is a re-envisioning of The Yates Project, which was founded in 2005 and honors Charlie L. Yates, the first African American graduate of 弗吉尼亚理工大学. Yates graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1958, earned a master’s degree at Cal Tech, 并获得了博士学位.D. 约翰霍普金斯大学. Later in his professional journey, he returned to 弗吉尼亚理工大学 as a professor and eventually a member of the Board of 访问ors. In 2003, 弗吉尼亚理工大学 dedicated a residence hall, Peddrew-Yates, to Yates and Irving Peddrew, the first African American student at 弗吉尼亚理工大学. 耶茨协会, comprised of 50 Scholars, provides current students the opportunity to conduct recruitment visits in their 首页towns during school breaks and participate in all recruitment events offered through the Office of Undergraduate 招生. These 耶茨学者 receive stipends at the end of the school year.
